So You Built a Website With AI. Now What?

AI has changed website development in a big way.

Today, you can describe the website you want to an AI tool and, in a surprisingly short amount of time, have something that looks pretty convincing. You might have a homepage, navigation, responsive-looking layouts, graphics, content, and even some basic functionality.

A few years ago, getting that far required a designer and developer. Now you can potentially get there during an afternoon.

That's pretty incredible.

But then comes the question we're hearing more often:

Now what?

You have a collection of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, or perhaps an entire project generated by an AI platform. It looks good in the preview. Maybe you've even made dozens of changes by continuing to prompt the AI.

But how do you turn it into an actual website?

A Website Concept Isn't Necessarily a Finished Website

One of the things AI is particularly good at is getting you through the early stages of website development quickly.

You can experiment with layouts. Try different colors. Rewrite headlines. Add sections. Change navigation. Ask for a completely different direction and see the result almost immediately.

That makes AI an excellent prototyping tool.

The problem is that there's a significant difference between generating a website and operating a website.

Eventually, someone needs to answer questions like:

  • Where is the website actually going to live?
  • How does your domain point to it?
  • Does it work properly on phones, tablets, and different browsers?
  • What happens when someone submits the contact form?
  • How is spam prevented?
  • Are analytics installed correctly?
  • Can search engines properly crawl and understand the site?
  • Is the site secure?
  • Are redirects and HTTPS configured correctly?
  • What happens when something breaks?
  • How do you make changes six months from now?

And that's before getting into ecommerce, databases, APIs, customer portals, third-party integrations, or any other functionality your business might need.

This is usually the point where an AI-generated website starts becoming a real web development project.

The Last 20% Can Be the Important 80%

AI can produce an impressive amount of code very quickly. But generated code doesn't necessarily understand the environment where it will ultimately run.

A website may look perfect in an AI preview while still needing significant work before it's ready for production.

There may be hard-coded links, placeholder content, unnecessary libraries, inconsistent CSS, accessibility problems, missing metadata, broken mobile layouts, forms that don't actually send anywhere, or functionality that only works inside the environment where it was created.

Some issues are obvious. Others don't become apparent until the website is deployed to a real server and real visitors start using it.

That's where an experienced web developer can be particularly valuable. Instead of starting over, the goal can often be to take what you've already created and finish the job.

You Don't Necessarily Need to Throw It Away

If you've spent hours building a website with AI and you're happy with the direction, bringing it to a web developer doesn't automatically mean starting from scratch.

Depending on how the site was created and what the AI platform allows you to export, much of that work may be usable.

A developer can review what you've created, identify what needs attention, and determine the best path toward turning it into a production website.

That might include refining the responsive design, reorganizing or cleaning up code, adding server-side functionality, connecting forms, configuring analytics, improving search-engine optimization, adding security protections, or integrating the site with other systems.

In other words, AI can get you surprisingly far. A developer can help get you across the finish line.

How Do You Host an AI-Generated Website?

Hosting is another area where things can suddenly get confusing.

An AI platform may give you a preview or a temporary URL, but your business probably wants something more permanent, such as yourcompany.com.

Getting there can involve your domain name, DNS, SSL certificates, web hosting, email considerations, server configuration, redirects, backups, security, and ongoing updates.

The exact requirements depend heavily on what AI created for you.

A simple static website has very different hosting requirements from a website that needs PHP, a database, ecommerce, user accounts, API integrations, or other server-side functionality.

There isn't necessarily one hosting solution that's right for every AI-generated website. That's why we prefer to look at what you've actually built before recommending how it should be deployed.

AI Doesn't Replace Web Development. It Changes Where Development Starts.

We think that's the more interesting shift happening right now.

Traditionally, a client might come to a web development company with a few examples of websites they like, a rough sitemap, some content, and an idea.

Increasingly, they may arrive with an entire working prototype.

That's a good thing.

If AI helps someone communicate exactly what they want, experiment with ideas, and get closer to the final product before involving a developer, the development process can become more efficient.

The role of the developer simply changes.

Instead of beginning with a blank page, we may begin by reviewing what has already been created and asking:

What does it take to make this production-ready?

Already Built Something With AI? We Can Help With the Next Part.

At BX3 Interactive, we've been building, hosting, maintaining, and integrating websites and web applications for more than two decades.

We're also embracing AI as part of the modern development process.

If you've built a website or prototype using AI and aren't sure what to do with it next, you don't necessarily need another AI prompt. You may just need someone who understands what happens after the prototype.

We can review what you've created, help refine it, determine what functionality is still needed, and work with you on getting it deployed and hosted properly.

You built the website with AI. Let us help you turn it into a website your business can actually use.
